Hat designer Anthony Maxwell was featured in the December 2002 issue of Essence. Maxwell, who hails from Texas but now lives in Brooklyn, is a former ballet dancer who has found his artistic niche in millinery. Women's Wear has called him a rising star and the brotha won rave reviews at Paris' National Prêt-à-Porter Commission expo. His designs, which Maxwell calls "sophisticated, yet easy to wear and practical, are available at specialty retailers including Bergdorf Goodman, from $275 to $500.

Michael Henry Adam's new book, "Harlem Lost and Found: 1765-1916" (Montacello Press) is a stunning, coffee table-worthy book that captures Harlem's architectural and historical gems of yesterday and today. Adams, whose Harlem tours are a fair-weather favorite, including his famous "Homo Harlem" tours, is a gentleman and scholar with a passion for history, style and preservation. This Ohio native who lives in exquisite splendor in central Harlem painstakingly and lovingly presents the neighborhood in this book (with photography by Paul Rocheleau) in a gorgeous light that will no doubt be a staple in African American libraries and parlors.

Colombian-born couturier Edwing D'Angelo has brought Soho style to Harlem. His boutique, Karaz (3183 Broadway), offers "unique, vibrant, urban wear with a Latin flair." The out-and-proud D'Angelo says he caters to those "willing to be different or daring."

Manuel-Josell Ramos has always been in love with the New York City underground scene and has spent the last few years documenting the excitement of night spots like the Paradise Garage in a film documentary that has been getting rave reviews at film festivals around the world. His film, "Maestro," shows the true lifestyles of the people involved with the evolution of the music. Ramos pays tribute to such legendary DJs as Larry Levan, David Mancuso and Danny Tenaglia. "Maestro" opens in the US in 2003.
