Broadway Inspirational Voices launched its ninth annual gospel concert on October 6th with exaltation and praise. The voices of 50-plus talented Broadway and Off Broadway performers began the Sunday opening at The Church of St. Mary the Virgin with "Rejoice" and "Anthem of Praise." BIV, in festive attire, was in rare form as they presented songs that inspired and moved the full house of fans.
Broadway darling Stephanie Mills put her unique voice to "The Storm Is Passing Over," her phrasing and vibrato bringing visibly moving the audience. Jason Paige was amazing with his rock-star presence and over-the-top lead on "Hosanna."
The group that originally began as The Broadway Gospel Choir is among New York's most talented choirs. This was shown many times over through a repertoire that was at times contemplative and serene and at other times evoking shouts, cries and outspoken fervor.
Founder and director Michael McElroy was in expert form as were the musicians headed by Joseph Joubert. Todd Pettiford, in a Joubert/McElroy song, "In God's Love," showed vocal finesse through a restrained and well-phrased interpretation. Bertilla Bake and Destan Owens had the audience on its feet with their jazz-scat rendition of "Down By the Riverside." And the phenomenal Billy Porter gave a stunning performance in "When Sunday Comes."
This concert, a benefit for Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS, is always an annual treat and this year's concert was certainly something to rejoice.
